tell me it's worth it'cause i'm doing all i can to fight it
Heidi had never been one to wander alone at night. The thought of being alone in the dark scared her for some odd reason, but she wasn’t in the mood to bother her brother either. He was probably out with someone. The last thing he needed was for his younger sister to be calling asking him to pick her up from the library, the last place one would ever see Noah Dawson. If it had anything to do with books or reading, he would be quick to protest and say no. He had done it his entire life. He was a really smart guy, but he never had to work for it. That only irked Heidii. She worked for every A that she earned in high school. And she would have to work hard for every A she would earn in college when she got there. That was why she was at the library. She said she was getting a head start! She made time for this, too. She took time out of her schedule to make sure she went to the library to do some research. She wasn’t exactly sure what she was looking for. She had spent more time on the internet and lying on a couch reading a book rather than accomplishing anything. It had gotten sort of late when she finally decided to go home. But it really wasn’t all that late. The sun had set. It was around eight when she finally started on her way home. Regardless of whether or she really liked walking home alone at night, Heidii felt safe doing so in Forks. The town wasn’t terrifying. It was pretty quiet and nothing ever really happened in town. It was like living in Pleasantville if you asked her. It was the perfect little town for perfect little families. Who would ever be afraid of a town like Forks despite the legends that had swirled of werewolves and vampires? Nothing ever seemed to happen, nothing big anyway. It was dull. Of course Heidii wasn’t afraid of walking home. It had never proved to be a bad idea during the day. Nighttime couldn’t change her perspective of this place. It probably should have, but it really didn’t. She wasn’t afraid. In fact, she felt sort of fearless in this town, for whatever reason. She was safe in her in opinion. No one she knew would completely disagree with her. Forks was harmless.
That was the opinion Heidii had managed to form. Noah had the same one, too, or he would have insisted he call her instead of telling her to be careful and only call if she needed. But what he couldn’t predict was the possibility that Heidii could need him but she didn’t have the ability to call him. That sort of thing seemed a bit farfetched, especially in a place like Forks because this was supposed to be the safest place on the planet. No one would have guessed anything bad could possibly occur, especially to a girl so sweet and kind. But Heidii always said bad things happen to good people because they were the ones who could handle it. She believed her moment was losing her parents and having being swept from one foster family to the other. As long as her brother was with her things would be fine. Heidii never expected what was about to occur the next three minutes. She was so close to home, just walked down her street, five houses away. She heard screaming from somewhere in the distance. She found it hard to believe that boys in Forks were drunk, but she assumed it was possible. She shook her head and continued on her way, until the speeding car was making its way in her direction. Heidii stopped to see what was going on or if it was what she thought it was. She couldn’t really recall what happened passed that point. She saw the headlights and the next thing she knew she saw nothing. It was suddenly like she was asleep. She didn’t feel anything. There was no pain. She felt like she was floating on a cloud. Wait! Was she dead? No, she was pretty sure she would be seeing bright lights if she was dead.
Ok, if Heidii wasn’t dead, she would really enjoy waking up and seeing what was going on. She was like to feel better to wake up and see herself in her bedroom. This all needed to be a big dream. Heidii has no clue how long it had taken before she started hearing noises, but she could hear them. It sounded it a lot like her brother. Great! Noah was around! She felt a little safer with him there. But she wished she could see him. She couldn’t force herself to wake up. Now, Heidii was starting to get annoyed. Why couldn’t she do anything? Was she having an outer body experience? It couldn’t be because then she would see her brother. This was so frustrating. Suddenly, his voice that was distanced moved closer. ”I’m sorry.” What the hell was her brother apologizing for? She should be the one apologizing because she couldn’t respond to him, or because she wasn’t responding to him. Then Heidii felt his hand reach for hers. She did her best to tighten her grip slightly around his hand. It worked because he got excited about it. She then heard him leave the room yelling someone else’s name. Kyler’s? She thought that was what she had heard. That was when she started to get worried. Something wasn’t right. Heidii shook her head as though she was having a bad dream. In reality, she was trying to force herself awake. She started to open her eyes, but she wasn’t all too interested in keeping the open the second light entered her eyes. ”Ugh,” she groaned, ”Someone turn the lights off.” Was there anyone even around to hear her.

There was something in the air, Kyler could feel it. He didn’t like it, but he didn’t want to get all worried like he usually did. He was trying his hardest to not let his wild emotions take hold of him. It wouldn’t be very good if this actually happened. Kyler knew that he was just asking crazy, nothing bad was going to happen. Kyler glanced over at the clock, and it was last, but it wasn’t that late. His dad was asleep on the couch with a beer in his hand. Kyler sighed, so much for him quitting. He moved himself away from the recliner he was on, and took the beer from the snoring man, and poured it down the drain, then put the glass bottle in the trash. Kyler glanced around the home he lived in, and knew he would miss this place a lot. It would be hard for him to leave now that he finally found something to live for. He knew he would only be a few hours away, but it still bothered him to be so far away from home. Kyler moved around the kitchen trying to find a drink, but all they had was beer, and Kyler wasn’t a drinker. He just didn’t have an interested in things like that, he thought of himself wanting more then just to sit on a couch and drink all living day. Kyler wanted more for himself. He didn’t want to sit in self pity all day, and want people to feel bad for him. It’s not what his mother would have wanted, so he is making something of himself. It may not be much, but it was much better then being nothing at all. Finally, Kyler just decided on some water. Good old water. He grabbed a glass for his dad as well because he knew that Matthew, his father, would be needing it when he woke up. Kyler placed a glass of water and four Advil’s on the table next to the couch. Afterwards, Kyler grabbed his things, and walked up stairs.
Once upstairs, he set down his stuff, and jumped into the shower. His shower wasn’t very long due to the fact that he hadn’t been able to work as much these past few weeks, so they had to cut back a lot. Kyler didn’t mind, just as long as he got his shower. If he didn’t he was pretty sure he had some people he could stay with until he was able to turn it back on. His dad didn’t really care anymore, Kyler practically has to force him to take showers and get out of the house. The only reason he will leave the house is to get more beer. Kyler honestly didn’t understand how people could stand to drink that kind of stuff. It was repulsive, and it made you have bad breath. Kyler often wondered what his mother would think if she ever saw this happening. It wouldn’t have ever happened if she was still around. Matthew would still have his job, and he would still be happy and sober. It was what Kyler wished the most out of everything, but he knew it was pointless to keep on wishing because no matter how hard he tried, it would never happen. With Heidii in his life, he knew that he would be okay after all. She was like the Guardian Angel his mother sent to him or something. Well, that’s how Kyler saw it anyways. After his shower, Kyler got changed for a nice, peaceful night of sleep. His dreams were almost as good as reality because Heidii was always in both. Though he preferred reality to dreams, he didn’t know someone who wouldn’t besides his dad.
Kyler slid into his bed, and closed his eyes. Kyler always believed that when you dreamed, they meant something important or had significant meaning to them. When he finally drifted off, he had the most unusual dream. It was about Heidii, naturally, but it wasn’t good. She was in trouble, and it was like Kyler could only stand there and watch. It made him upset that he had to sit there and watch something like that. There was a light getting closer to Heidii, and then Kyler sprang up from the bed. He was covered in sweat. He glanced down at the clock, it was late, and his phone was going off. Kyler picked it up, and heard loud voices. He knew who it was, it was Noah, but why would he be calling so late in the night? Kyler said very calmly into the phone, ”Noah…Calm down please. I can’t--” Kyler was cut off by his next words. He snapped his phone shut, and pulled on the clothes he had been wearing earlier, and grabbed a jacket from his closet. He pulled on his shoes, and grabbed his keys and ran out the door. Kyler wasn’t one to break the law, but this was an emergency, and it wasn’t like he would get caught. His mind was on Heidii and getting to the hospital.
When he got there he quickly found Noah. He told Kyler what had happened, and that she hadn’t waken up. Kyler sat on the chairs outside, and waited for an update. He didn’t know how long he had dozed off, but he was alert when Noah called his. Kyler leaped up, and ran into the room. He went to Heidii’s side, and smiled half heartedly. He took her hand lightly, and put it up to his forehead. ”Sorry, but I’m not thinking that’s possible at the moment,”

tell me it's worth it'cause i'm doing all i can to fight it
Heidii could not say she was very pleased with her current situation. It took a while to realize exactly where she was, a hospital. Her eyes were wide as she silently waited in panic for someone to enter her room. She didn’t want to be here. What happened? Why was she here? This forced her to rethink about the events that happened prior to her “hospitalization.” She had just been walking home, right? There was nothing wrong, nothing harmful about walking home, not usually. Obviously, this time there was. Something really bad had occurred from walking home. He had almost become road kill, though that was a bad way of looking at it. She prayed the assholes responsible for putting her where she currently laid were locked away somewhere, if only for a night. It wasn’t fair that someone as innocent as her was lying there while someone as dumb as that moron was driving around the street. Then again, she was here, someone had to have stopped and called the ambulance. Though, someone may have just found her there on the side of the street. It wasn’t like she knew. She wasn’t conscious for it. This was the first awake moment she had had since she remembered the lights. It frightened her. No one wanted to wake up to find themselves in a hospital room. After all, Heidii especially didn’t do anything to deserve the punishment of being forced into a hospital. She was innocent, just an innocent bystander involved in someone’s drunken night out. Well, she could only assume they were drunk. She didn’t exactly know for sure if that was the case, but she could only guess that much. Still, she was scared out of her mind. What was she supposed to do? How long was she going to have to be here? And what about Kyler.
As Heidii panicked in her head for what seemed like hours after speaking for the first time since waking, Kyler had walked in, and he had obviously been there since she first spoke. She felt his hand first and smiled as he held hers. She turned her head in his direction and looked at him. She felt incredibly comfortable with him around. Though she was lying in a hospital bed, she felt ok. She hated hospitals but it was ok since he was there. She felt so at home with him. It was unbelievable. No one made Heidii feel as safe as Kyler did, not even Noah, and that was saying something when the only constant she had ever had in her life was her brother. The only person she could ever trust was him. No foster family ever had her trust and love the way her brother, and now Kyler did. It was a different story all together when she was with them. She knew it was right. Heidii never questioned a thing about their relationship. It was just perfect in her mind. Even if it really wasn’t on the outside, no one could convince her otherwise. Then again, this was the first time she had ever been in love. She prayed and hoped it would only ever be the only time she was in love, and that she would never have to worry about boys again because she would always have Kyler. There was something special about him. Just look at him now! He had come to the hospital despite the fact that he didn’t’ have to. He was even the first person she saw, though she was pretty sure that was her brother’s doing.
Heidii frowned slightly at Kyler. ”Why is it not possible?” This confused her. It wasn’t like he couldn’t turn down the light. It was her hospital room. If she wanted it, she should have been able to get it. Or was he referring to something else, like her even being in the predicament she was in. That was unbelievable to her, too. She really hadn’t done anything to deserve this. In fact, after everything Heidii had been through in her life, especially losing her parents, one would think she deserved so much more than what she had been given. This wasn’t fair, not at all. She would never think this was fair and she would never say it was fate that this happened. She almost lost her life. She was lucky to be breathing. She would also be lucky if there was nothing else wrong with her and that she managed to escape only with scrapes and bruises. Then again, no one deserved to be run over by anyone, especially some reckless teenagers. She knew that they were that much. No adult in the right mind would have been blaring the music they had been. She rattled her brain, trying to figure out how to explain what happened to both her brother and her boyfriend. There were no words. So, she decided just to got how she felt.
”I feel like I was hit by a bus,” Heidii said with a slight laugh to lighten the mood before she got it to be serious. ”It was horrible, Kyler. I was just going home. I was walking and the next thing I know…I’m here. And I don’t like here. Here…hospitals scare me.” She couldn’t imagine it was much better to be woken up by your girlfriend’s brother either, especially when they were telling you your girlfriend was in the hospital. ”I’m sorry,” she whispered. Heidii knew it wasn’t her fault, but the least she could do was apologize.

Kyler didn’t like being here. Yes, hospitals were amazing for sick people, and helped lots of people get better, but he didn’t like them. They were too bright, and they tried to be cheerful when they weren’t. How could a place be so bright and cheerful when terrible things happened here? Death lingered in places like these, and it freaked Kyler out. The last time he had been in the hospital was to visit his sick mother, and it’d always freaked him out then too. So to be back in a place that haunted Kyler, well, it wasn’t exactly good. While he was glad for doctors and people like that, Kyler didn’t like it here. He refused, as a child, to be taken back to the place where his mother had died. She had died alone in a cold hospital room with some old person next to her. No, that was not something Kyler wanted to remember. Not as a child, as a child he wanted those good memories, the ones his mother would want him to remember. She wouldn’t want him to remember her as a sickly mother, no she’d want him to remember her as the lively, playful mother she was. And that’s how Kyler remembered her, until he came anywhere near a hospital. The mental images of her popped into his head, and gave him that uneasy feeling that made him think that his mother suffered a lot when she was here. Kyler was sure that they had good doctors and nurses, but he couldn’t help but wonder if his mother had had a nurse that didn’t like her job. So, being here again wasn’t the greatest feeling. He couldn’t even imagine how Heidii must feel, but then again she’s sleeping, so she might not feel anything. That might be nice once in a while, but he didn’t want that to be her.
It was like karma or something. Maybe Kyler wasn’t the greatest kid, he said things about his dad when he got super drunk, he got a bad grade once in a while, and didn’t show his dad. Those weren’t really bad things though, were they? He didn’t disobey his parents because he was basically his own parent. He didn’t steal, he didn’t hurt anyone, so why was this happening to him? First, they took his mother, and now they want to take his girlfriend. What, was the world against him or something? When he was happy, the universe just decide to snatch it away from him! It honestly wasn’t fair, he’d already lost one person, and he just wasn’t in mood to get someone else taken from him. It just wasn’t acceptable, nope. Kyler refused to give Heidii up. There wasn’t anyway that he was giving her up, he’d have to die too. He wasn’t losing someone like her, he had just found her. Kyler’s heart was finally healing from his mother, and he didn’t want to relive what he had felt back then. It wasn’t a fun feeling to feel. Kyler sighed, and pulled out his phone to call his dad and let him know where he was. He didn’t want the drunk to wake up, and panic about where his son was this late in the night. Kyler, of course, got voicemail, so he just left a message, and said he would be home when he could be. When he walked back into the hospital, Noah told him Heidii was awake. Kyler had insisted that Noah go and see her first being that she was his sister, and all. But Noah insisted that Kyler go in there first. Kyler assumed that maybe Noah just wasn’t ready to see his little sister like this.
Kyler could understand that, he wouldn’t actually know, but he was sure that if he had experienced something like this he would be the same way. He’d want someone else to go in, and see them first. But with Noah it was a little different, Heidii was the only thing he had left for family. Kyler had his dad, but Heidii was still the love of his life, he couldn’t let her go. Kyler knew that Noah must have felt the same way, that was his little sister! Kyler would do everything in his power to make sure she got the best treatment, even if it meant spending his college money. He wanted to make sure that she got the best doctors, which would be Dr. Cullen, of course. Everyone knew he was the best of the best, even if half his patients didn’t know he was a vampire. It was hard for Kyler to see Heidii like that, but he didn’t let it show on his face, or at least he tried not too. Kyler sighed, and dimmed the lights in her room. It was going to be hard to explain this to her. Kyler knew it, and it was still even hard for him to believe that it had happened to her. After everything she’d been through in her life, she was the one with the tragic accident. Why couldn’t it have been some rapist or murder? Kyler pulled a chair up next to her bed, and listened to her talk. It was painful to hear her talk about it.
Of course it was drunk teenagers, Kyler had thought as much. Or just a plain old drunk man thinking he could drink and drive like he had some sort of skill. The thought of drunk men brought him to his father. His father never left the house, and when he did he was normally sober. But how many times, Kyler wondered, had his father been drunk and drove home? Kyler knew that his father wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he had killed someone. His father wasn’t able to bear that kind of guilt. Hence why he was always drunk. His father felt some what responsible for Kyler’s mother’s death. Though they both knew that that wasn’t the case at all. But Kyler felt some sort of guilt for it too. It was only natural. Kyler looked at Heidii, and said, ”You should’ve called Noah to come pick you up.” He didn’t want to nag her, but if she would’ve called Noah, she could be safe in bed, sleeping. ”It’s not your fault Heidii, you were just walking home. It’s not like you were the one driving the car drunk.”
Kyler couldn’t help but have bitterness in his voice as he thought about drinking and driving. Kyler took his hand, the one that didn’t have IV’s in it, and held it in his for a long while. Finally, he spoke up and said, ”I’ll make sure you get all the right treatments, I promise. You’ll have Dr. Cullen see over you, he is the best there is.” Of course he had already talked to Noah about, and he agreed with Kyler. ”I love you Heidii, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you, not as long as I’m breathing,” he told her quietly, then kissed the back of her hand. tell me it's worth it'cause i'm doing all i can to fight it
Heidii in her lifetime had been put through a lot of things. Every new challenge made her stronger, she had decided. Then again, when your parents are taken from you before you’re even enrolled in elementary school you had to find something to believe it, even if it was that each new challenge presented to you was either meant to be or somehow used to make you just a little bit stronger. Heidii happened to believe both of those things. However, she was slowly getting fed up with all of this stuff. Life had taken her parents from her. Then it threatened to take her brother from her with this whole foster family thing. Then it moved her from one state to the other putting her in families that really didn’t want her or couldn’t afford to have both her and her brother around. Life just over all sucked for Heidii, but she did the best she could to make it all work out. She never even complained about what had happened. She just swallowed it all and continued on her way with a big smile on her face, not letting a single thing bother her. But she had reached her breaking point. Yet, with Kyler sitting in the room, she did her very best to remain as optimistic and happy as possible. She couldn’t afford to let him see her break. If Heidii broke down and showed stress Kyler would only do the same. They couldn’t have three people freaking out. She was sure Noah was enough for them. Oh no. Noah! Where was he? He had to be here. Why had he sent in Kyler first? Not that Heidii completely minded. She liked seeing his face when she first opened her eyes, but Noah was her brother, the only thing she had left in the world from her horrible past that was only supposed to lead to a spectacular future. He was supposed to be here!
It took a lot for Heidii to let her mind rest and put that behind her. He probably just wanted to send Kyler in first to hear from him whether or not she was ok. She didn’t like the feeling of people worrying about her either. She could just imagine what was going on in Kyler’s mind right now. He had been through a lot, too, what with losing his mother. She couldn’t begin to guess everything he was thinking of. Getting that call that Heidii was in the hospital had to set every alarm off in his head because of losing his mother. Never once did she ever feel as though she filled the void losing his mother had caused him, but Heidii knew she made things a little easier for him. But it wasn’t like she was dead. Getting a call at night probably made him freak out like she was, though. Ugh! She hated this. People needed to not worry about her. If something was going to happen to her then there was no force in the world that could stop something from hurting her and that was just how it was supposed to be. Heidii really was naïve if she thought know one would be worried about her if something bad happened. She would personally panic and run around like a hyperactive kid trying to figure out how to fix things or why it should have been her instead of someone else. So, could she really blame them? If she was likely to do it she couldn’t hold anyone else accountable for acting that way. Still, it didn’t mean she had to enjoy it any. Weren’t there other things more important to life than to worry about a silly little orphan girl who was stupid enough to walk home instead of calling her brother to get her?
And Kyler made sure Heidii knew she should have called instead of just walking. It wasn’t like she didn’t walk home all the time. It was just down the street from home. She always walked that way. What made the difference now? Oh, yeah, this one time something had happened. It only added to her stress level, but she refrained from making things worse and trying to start an argument with him. She wouldn’t say how she was an adult and she had walked home a number of times in most of the places she lived. She wouldn’t say that Noah was out and couldn’t get her even she wanted him to. And she wouldn’t even tell him how she thought that she was likely to be here whether or not her brother drove her home or not. She would just let it go because that’s what Heidii always did. Not to mention, she was pretty sure Kyler hadn’t meant it the way she took it. He was just concerned and worried. She just didn’t want to be told what she should have done. ”No, I wasn’t responsible for what happened, but I am responsible for you being here right now.” He had already pointed out that had she called her brother they wouldn’t be in this situation, but they couldn’t change it now. The only option they really had was to pick up and move passed it, if they could even manage to do that. It all depended on what she was told tonight.
There was something strange about Kyler and the way he was talking to her. Heidii wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. She rubbed his hand with her thumb and listened quietly and curiously as he spoke to her. She was still confused by all of this. Who was Dr. Cullen? What did he need to treat about her? She thought she was perfectly fine. There were a few cuts and bruises, but not much of anything else. She was pretty sure she could just walk out of the hospital perfectly fine. And what was happening to her that Kyler needed to protect her from? Was there someone out to get Heidii or something? She didn’t understand. What was he talking about? This scared her because it meant there was something she as missing. Did she have internal bleeding?! That would horrible because it was one slow and painful way to die. It took her a while to make her mouth move and force some sound out of it. ”What are you talking about, Kyler?” she tilted her head, ”Not that I’m not glad that you want to make sure I’m ok, but….what are you not telling me? What do you know that I don’t?” She of all people needed to know what was wrong with her, right? If he didn’t tell her, she would be very upset. It scared her. It was in her eyes. She hoped he didn’t see it, though. She was never weak in anyone’s eyes. She may have been outcasted, but she was not weak. Btu being in that hospital bed with Kyler talking to her that way, Heidii just felt so vulnerable. She felt like something absolutely horrible was happening to her and she was angry and horrified by the thought of it.
